is the recipients of the journal's Outstanding Paper Award for Excellence for her paper

"What you know and who you know: 'successful' women's experiences of accessing board positions"

which appeared in Career Development International, Vol. 7 No. 4, 2002

Dr Alison Sheridan is a Senior Lecturer in the New England Business School, University of New England, Australia. She has an ongoing research interest in women's experiences at different levels of management and has published a number of papers in this area. Her work on women's experiences on corporate boards was an extension of her previous research that focused on women's experiences within organisations. The project from which this paper emerged received considerable attention in the popular press at a time when corporate governance issues are generating considerable debate. Her advice to women seeking board positions is to build on their work experience and business acumen by making more contacts.
