HYDROX BIO 68 eco-friendly emulsifiable sterntube oil – 100 and counting

Keyword: Oils, Lubricants, Marine transport

Vickers Oils recently supplied their 100th vessel with HYDROX BIO, their award winning eco-friendly emulsifiable sterntube oil. Whilst the cruise sector was the first to take up HYDROX BIO sterntube oil, Vickers now supply vessels in most segments of the marine industry.

The HYDROX BIO range comprises three grades:

1 HYDROX BIO 68 is the lead product and is an ISO 68 viscosity grade.

2 HYDROX BIO 100 is an ISO 100 viscosity variant.

3 HYDROX BIO 220 is used when seal damage, often due to fishing nets or other debris, causes outboard oil loss; in such circumstances the addition of HYDROX BIO 220 results in a massive reduction in the rate of leakage.

HYDROX BIO 68 offers clear technical, as well as environmental benefits as compared with conventional sterntube oils. Many of the owners and managers switching over to HYDROX BIO 68 do so as part of their preventive maintenance and environmental compliance programmes.

Preventive maintenance

HYDROX BIO 68 offers a high standard of bearing lubrication. It has an ability to absorb ingressing seawater and, in so doing, ensures that the lubricating and anti-corrosive performance is maintained, thus protecting the bearing, shaft and liner.

The benefit to the operator is that vessels can continue in uninterrupted service, even with significant quantities of water present, thereby avoiding unscheduled repairs and even dockings.

Environmental compliance

HYDROX BIO 68 is truly “Readily Biodegradable” according to the internationally recognised OECD 301B test. It is also non-toxic to the marine environment. Vickers have commissioned independent testing on organisms at each stage of the food chain to confirm this.

In addition, HYDROX BIO 68 is based on renewable resources.

Classification societies

The performance of HYDROX BIO 68 is formally recognised in a variety of ways by Lloyds Register, ABS, BV and RINA.
