Sudan's civil war will grind on
Friday, April 19, 2024
Significance
Thousands of combatants and civilians have been killed, over 8 million people (around one-fifth of the population) have been displaced and 18 million face severe acute food insecurity, which could well evolve into a major famine. The country is now divided into rival zones of control, with no single party holding the capital, Khartoum.
Impacts
- The economy will remain diminished and partly reoriented by SAF towards military purposes.
- Significant ongoing civilian casualties are inevitable, especially without international action to curtail arms flows to both sides.
- New localised population displacements will occur, but some civilians may also return to areas where fighting has subsided.
