On reflection …

When reading the papers for IJPPM, it may seem that performance measurement and management is a complicated subject – we have a variety of papers, across a range of sectors, using a variety of methods, all claiming that particular variables or factors are the key elements to be considered.

Our personal viewpoint on most issues is that there is usually an underlying simplicity to perceived complexity – we just need to look, analyse, think and reflect on what we read and observe until the underlying patterns start to emerge.

You probably think you know where this is heading. That we will finish this introduction and then go on to point out the underlying patterns we have detected – and in a few short paragraphs, we will sum up the “secrets to successful performance management”.

However, if you thought this then you are wrong. We could do that – or we think we could do that. But we are not going to. We present the variety of papers that we do in IJPPM so that you can better search for the universal truth yourself. If we do it for you, it will not be your truth.

So, keep reading – and use what you read here to help filter your personal observations and experiences, and create your own personal theory. By all means then submit it to us – possibly as a reflective practice paper. You might change – and improve – everybody else’s thinking.
