Abstract

Summarises BNR′s recent (1989) experience of developing increasingly sophisticated network maintenance applications, covering switch modules to nationwide networks and interactive repair assistance to integrated real time monitoring. Fails to explain who, which or what BNR is. Describes prototypes, including knowledge‐based design, specialised software tools, user‐customisable databases, and advanced user interfaces. Highlights the synergy of different technologies, arguing for their integration into mainstream operations. Proposes an architectural framework to help achieve it.
