About the Authors

Piet Croucamp is Senior Lecturer of Political Studies and International Relations in the School of Government Studies at the Vaal Triangle Campus, North West University, South Africa. His main expertise is in the areas of violence, political risk assessment, and democracy, in addition to research methods.

Pieter Heydenrych is Senior Lecturer in the School of Government Studies at the Potchefstroom Campus, North West University, South Africa. His main expertise are in the fields of participation in local government, democracy, and democratic theory.

Oskar Malmgren is Research Assistant at Linnaeus University, Sweden. He is a Linnaeus Palme scholar in the School of Government Studies at Potchefstroom Campus, North West University, South Africa. He has conducted research on the development of democracy and democratic consolidation in postapartheid South Africa.

KGame A. Molope is Lecturer in the School of Government Studies at the Mahikeng Campus, North West University, South Africa. His background is in the area of Peace Studies with conducted research on Conflict Studies and International Relations.

Martin Nilsson is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. His main research areas are democratic institutions, and challenges to transitions to and consolidation of democracy.

Emma Ricknell has a PhD in Political Science from Linnaeus University, Sweden. Her main research areas are institutions, legislative politics, and representation, but she has also conducted research on the construction of national identity and sports in postapartheid South Africa.

Charlotte Silander is a Associate Professor of Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. Her research focus is on gender equality in higher education, systems of higher education, and research policy. Her main empirical focus has been on the Nordic and European Union states with comparative analysis on Australia, South Africa, and the US.

Daniel Silander is Associate Professor of Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. His main areas of interests are international security and democratization. He is also Project Leader of Linnaeus Palme collaboration between Linnaeus University, Sweden, and North-West University, South Africa.

Prince Simunkombwe is Research Assistant at Linnaeus University, Sweden, and specializes in International Affairs. He is interested in the politics of developing countries, international relations, security, and democratization.

Herman van der Elst is Associate Professor of Political Studies and International Relations at the School of Government Studies, Vaal Triangle Campus, North West University, South Africa. His current research focus is on African Politics and Governance Issues in South Africa.

Gideon van Riet is Senior Lecturer in Political Studies in the School of Government Studies at the Potchefstroom Campus, North West University, South Africa. His main research focus is on critical security studies with an approach to situate technologies of security within their particular sociopolitical context.
