A journey of thousands of miles

begins with the first step.

–Laozi, Tao Te Ching, Ch. 64

Many of life's failures are people who did not realize

how close they were to success when they gave up.

In the prologue, I invited you to join me in exploring Laozi's ‘Three Treasures’ as a foundation for responsible management. Now that you've started down the path, I'd like to emphasize that becoming knowledgeable in the Tao's principles and incorporating them into your life and work is a continuous and ever-evolving endeavour. Your level of success in this endeavour will be directly related to how deeply you comprehend and apply Laozi's teachings. In this final section, I'd like to offer a summary of the most important Taoist principles from the entire book, so that you can take them with you and put them to use in your personal and professional life.

The Tao, as described in Taoist philosophy, is the ultimate source of wisdom and guidance, representing an ideal of perfect harmony and balance. Embodying the Tao means living in accordance with its principles, becoming a true exemplar of its wisdom and grace. In the context of leadership, this involves leading with wisdom, compassion and humility, while cultivating a profound awareness of and connection to the world around you. Embracing the Tao in responsible management entails fostering an ethical and sustainable culture within organizations.

I wish to present the key principles of Tao and a set of the guidelines for you to take away to integrate into your personal and professional life.

Practice humility: Humility is a vital virtue in Taoism, centred on ‘emptying oneself’ by releasing ego-driven attachments and recognizing your place within a larger whole. When business leaders embrace humility, they become more receptive to the wisdom of others and foster a sense of compassion, empathy and interconnectedness. Responsible management requires humility, openness to feedback and a willingness to learn from others.

The guidelines that can assist you in practicing humility:

  • Regularly engage in self-reflection to identify areas for personal growth and development.

  • Actively seek feedback from your team, peers and mentors.

  • Recognize and celebrate the achievements of others, fostering a supportive environment.

  • Practice active listening to better understand diverse perspectives and ideas.

Act with integrity: Integrity is a crucial Taoist principle, calling for honesty, authenticity and moral action. Responsible management demands leaders to conduct themselves transparently, responsibly and in the best interests of their organization, stakeholders and society at large.

The guidelines that can assist you in acting with integrity:

  • Develop a clear personal and organizational code of ethics.

  • Be transparent in your decision-making processes and ensure that they align with your ethical values.

  • Hold yourself and others accountable for ethical conduct.

  • Stand up against unethical behaviour or practices, even when it may be challenging.

Embrace simplicity: Simplicity is integral to living in harmony with the Tao. Business leaders who simplify processes and reduce complexity create efficient, effective workplaces and earn the trust and respect of their teams. Responsible management focuses on core values and missions while avoiding unnecessary complications and bureaucracy.

The guidelines that can assist you in embracing simplicity:

  • Prioritize tasks and projects, focusing on those with the most significant impact.

  • Streamline processes and systems to eliminate redundancy and inefficiency.

  • Encourage clear, concise communication within your team and organization.

  • Practice mindfulness to reduce mental clutter and improve focus.

Promote balance and harmony: Taoism emphasizes the interconnectedness and interdependence of all things. Responsible management calls for balancing the needs of various stakeholders and fostering open communication, collaboration and trust.

The guidelines that can assist you in promoting balance and harmony:

  • Develop an inclusive work culture that values diversity and fosters equity.

  • Encourage open dialogue and collaboration among team members.

  • Foster a healthy work–life balance for yourself and your team.

  • Address conflicts and challenges proactively and constructively.

Cultivate ethical behaviour: Ethical conduct is central to harmony and balance in Taoism. Responsible management involves promoting transparency, accountability and ethical behaviour by leading by example and fostering a culture of trust and respect.

The guidelines that can assist you in cultivating ethical behaviour:

  • Clearly articulate and model the ethical standards you expect from your team.

  • Provide training and resources to support ethical decision-making.

  • Recognize and reward ethical conduct within your organization.

  • Foster a safe and supportive environment for reporting ethical concerns.

Embrace change: Change is a constant in life, and Taoist philosophy teaches that accepting and adapting to change is crucial for harmony. Business leaders who embrace change and live in the present moment can inspire confidence and trust in their followers. Responsible management requires openness to new ideas and a willingness to adapt.

The guidelines that can assist you in embracing change:

  • Stay informed about industry trends, new technologies and innovative practices.

  • Encourage a culture of learning and development within your team.

  • Be open to new ideas and approaches, even if they challenge the status quo.

  • Support your team during times of change, providing guidance and resources for a smooth transition.

Emphasize sustainability: Living in harmony with nature and prioritizing sustainability are key principles of Taoism. Responsible management calls for business leaders to minimize their organization's environmental impact, adopt eco-friendly practices and promote responsible production and consumption.

The guidelines that can assist you in emphasizing sustainability:

  • Assess your organization's environmental impact and identify areas for improvement.

  • Develop and implement sustainable policies and practices.

  • Engage with stakeholders to collaboratively address sustainability challenges.

  • Communicate your organization's commitment to sustainability internally and externally.

The wisdom of Taoism offers valuable guidance for responsible management and leadership. Therefore, embracing and embodying the principles of the Tao, you can foster ethical, sustainable and harmonious organizations that thrive in the VUCA world. There is much to be learned about responsible management and leadership from Taoist philosophy. Those who follow these guidelines and incorporating the key Taoist principles into their management strategy can develop a responsible and sustainable business that survives in an ever-changing and uncertain world. Those who embrace the Tao in their management style will not only benefit their organization but also contribute positively to the world around them.
